10 reasons why Beagles are the best dogs

The cute tax is real: those soulful, trusting eyes tell you everything you need to know

Ask any Beagle owner why their dog is the best and they'll wax lyrical about all the things they love about their precious pooch! But just why are Beagles one of the most popular dog breeds around? From their wonderful personalities through to their fun-loving energetic nature, there are many reasons households around the world are choosing a Beagle as their new pet. Let's find out more!

1) Beagles love people

Do you love Beagles? Well, the good news is that your Beagle will most likely love you right back! Beagles adore being around people and love nothing better than hanging out with their human best friend.

I do have a word of caution here - too much love is not always a good thing! Beagles that get too attached to their owners can suffer from separation anxiety when left alone. So, while it's wonderful to shower your Beagle with love and affection, make sure they are also comfortable with spending time alone.

2) Beagles have the best personalities

For me, Beagles tick all the boxes when it comes to canine personality traits – they are loving without being clingy, like to have fun but also enjoy spending time relaxing, and are loyal without being possessive and overprotective. Their sociable nature also means they enjoy meeting new people and other animals, and they fit in well as part of a multi-pet household. I truly can't think of a dog breed better suited to living with humans, but then I am probably quite biased!

3) Beagles love to have fun

The American Kennel Club describes Beagles as curious, and I’d have to agree! Your Beagle will be interested in anything and everything that happens around them, and this character trait makes them a joy to be around. These long-eared hounds just adore to have fun and will take delight in the world around them on a daily basis.

This character trait also means that Beagles can get bored if not provided with sufficient mental stimulation, but luckily they are easily kept entertained with toys, chews, and puzzles when human playtime is not an option.

4) Beagles are easy to care for

Owning a Beagle doesn't mean you'll be booking in at the grooming parlor every few weeks - these beautiful dogs have a short coat that requires minimal maintenance to keep it in good condition. A weekly groom with a soft brush is sufficient to remove loose hair and dander, keeping the coat soft, smooth, and beautifully shiny.

One aspect of Beagle care that mustn't be overlooked is those adorable dangly ears, which can hide a myriad of problems. The ear flaps should be regularly groomed with a small, soft brush, and any dirt and debris around the outside of the ear wiped away with damp cotton wool.

5) Beagles adore to cuddle

Life with a Beagle isn't all just fun and games - when the time comes to relax, your Beagle will happily snuggle up like a lapdog! Their compact size means that they are small enough to fit on the couch next to their favorite humans, enjoying some quality relaxation time at the end of the day.

6) Beagles excel at canine sports

Beagles were originally bred as hunting dogs, and they have retained many instincts that make them perfect for canine sports. Thanks to their incredible sense of smell Beagles excel at tracking and drag hunting, and their energetic nature makes them perfect for agility and endurance. If you're feeling really brave you could try entering your Beagle in some local obedience classes, but bear in mind that this breed is notorious for being easily distracted!

7) Beagles are very intelligent

Do you ever hear dog owners say that they feel like their dogs understand them? Well, with Beagles I really do think this is true! They seem to be able to sense the tiniest cues, anticipating a long-awaited walk or dinner time before we've barely had a chance to think about It.

Beagles are also incredible at problem-solving. Playtime with a Beagle may be all fun and games, but get their mind focused on a job and a Beagle will stop at nothing to get it done. Many people will tell you how their Beagle can solve complex puzzle toys within a matter of minutes, or how they figured out how to open gates or doors.

8) Beagles have a long lifespan

Beagles are classed as a medium dog breed, but they have a lifespan comparable to much smaller dog breeds. The average life expectancy of a Beagle is 10 to 15 years, and it isn’t uncommon for Beagles to reach their 20th birthday! They are generally a healthy breed of dog and can live for many years with few medical problems.

9) Beagles are wonderful family dogs

Beagles are one of those dog breeds that slot perfectly into family life, seeming to thrive on having a house full of people around them. They are the perfect breed for older children to practice their dog training skills on, and will enjoy snuggling up with all members of the family at the end of the day.

10) Beagles make great therapy and service dogs

Beagles don't just flourish as family pets - many also enjoy their role as service or therapy dogs. Beagles have a particularly keen sense of smell and excel as detector dogs, sniffing out narcotics, bombs, food, and even bed bugs! Their friendly and attentive nature makes them the ideal therapy dog, helping to support people with complex emotional needs.

I hope you enjoyed our list of reasons why Beagles are the best dogs. Of course, I’m biased, and narrowing it down to just ten was a struggle. Ask any Beagle fan and I’m sure they will tell you ten more reasons!
